Research Interests

Dr. Harper's research focuses on computer modeling of human communication with a focus on methods for incorporating multiple types of knowledge sources, including lexical, syntactic, prosodic, and most recently visual sources. Recent research involves the integration of speech and natural language processing systems, the integration of speech, gesture, and gaze, and the utilization of hierarchical structure to improve the classification accuracy of documents and images. This work is guided by the fact that people utilize a wide variety of knowledge sources such as acoustic, lexical, syntactic, prosodic, semantic, contextual, and visual information to interpret human communication.
